Supporting Carbon Innovation Through Soil Science

Collaborating with The University of Sydney on Baseline Soil Sampling

At OptiSoil, we’re proud to contribute to forward-thinking research in soil carbon and land management. Recently, our team completed a large-scale sampling project in collaboration with The University of Sydney as part of their Carbon Innovation Challenge.

The project involved collecting baseline soil samples from 40 farms across northern New South Wales and north-west Queensland. From diverse landscapes to different land-use systems, each farm presented its own unique story and soil profile. Our role was to ensure those stories were accurately captured through scientifically designed sampling, precise fieldwork, and reliable data collection.

The Importance of Baseline Sampling

Baseline soil data is critical for measuring change over time, particularly when evaluating soil carbon levels and the impact of regenerative practices. Accurate, region-specific sampling enables researchers and land managers to monitor trends, improve soil health, and participate in emerging carbon markets with confidence.

Our Approach in the Field

On this trip, our field crew travelled through remote farming regions equipped with purpose-built sampling trailers. Using structured soil sampling designs, we collected core samples at multiple depths to capture both surface and subsoil characteristics.

We complemented sampling with observations of soil texture, structure, and visual indicators that add value to the analytical results. Our process ensures every sample reflects the true nature of the landscape it was taken from.

Driving Innovation from the Ground Up

This project reflects what OptiSoil does best - bringing together field knowledge, scientific rigour, and a passion for sustainable land management. By supporting high-impact research like The University of Sydney’s Carbon Innovation Challenge, we’re helping to build the evidence base for climate-smart agriculture in Australia.

Whether you’re planning a research project, exploring carbon farming, or seeking to better understand your land, OptiSoil is here to support you with data-driven, science-backed solutions.
