OptiSoil Expands Capabilities with New Proximal Sensing Equipment

5th December 2023

OptiSoil is pleased to share news of our recent acquisition of proximal sensing equipment, a move aimed at better supporting our farming community through improved soil analysis and mapping.

Journey of Collaboration and Growth

This development builds on our three-year journey conducting proximal sensing surveys across the eastern wheat belt. It was here that Ned, working for PCT Agservices, began seeing the potential for precision agriculture technology and traditional soil science to be properly integrated, setting the foundation for this new chapter at OptiSoil.

Meet David West – Leading Our Soil Sampling Efforts in QLD

David West ('Westy') has been integral to our soil sampling activities in Queensland. He also runs the new proximal sensing equipment for us and is currently in the Riverina mapping cotton fields for optimal placement of soil moisture probes, helping to improve irrigation efficiencies. This work also aids in identifying different soil types, a key aspect of managing variable soil environments. We’ll be following up the EM and Gamma surveys with strategic soil sampling to begin characterisation of the fields under survey.

Westy's expertise in proximal sensing ensures survey collection by OptiSoil is completed on time, and to the highest standard.

A Step Forward in Soil Characterisation

These proximal sensing surveys complement our existing methods of soil analysis. By combining them with our intensive soil core collection and lab-based proximal sensing technologies, we are enhancing our ability to create detailed soil maps. These maps are valuable tools for farmers, assisting in decisions related to soil amelioration and crop nutrition.

Affordable Soil Mapping for Practical Use

Our goal is to make detailed soil mapping an accessible tool for all farmers, not just a select few. We understand the importance of practical and affordable solutions in agriculture, and we're committed to providing these through our services.

Look Out for Westy on the Road

If you're located between Emerald and Bendigo, you might spot Westy in the Troopie. He's out there gathering important data to help us all farm better.
