EM and Gamma Surveys in Almond Orchards: Early Detection of Salinity Risk

4th November 2025

At OptiSoil, we recently conducted a series of EM (Electromagnetic) and Gamma radiometric surveys in an almond orchard - timed precisely before the nut set stage. This early window is crucial, as once the canopy thickens and the gator can no longer access between the rows, effective soil mapping becomes significantly more challenging.

Why Survey Now?

Almond trees, like many permanent crops, are particularly sensitive to changes in soil salinity. By carrying out surveys early in the season, we can capture a clear and comprehensive picture of sub-surface conditions before the orchard becomes physically restrictive. This proactive approach ensures we gather high-quality data without disrupting plant growth or damaging the orchard structure.

Understanding the Soil Salinity Risk

The goal of these surveys is to identify zones within the orchard that are at risk of developing salinity issues in the future. Using EM conductivity and gamma radiation data, we can classify the landscape based on soil properties and their potential to accumulate salts.

The resulting classification maps show “safe” zones in green, while other colours indicate varying types and intensities of potential salt expression. These insights are essential for long-term soil and crop health.

What Can Be Done?

With this data, growers can implement strategic irrigation management plans to prevent salts from rising into the root zone. By adjusting water volumes, frequencies and delivery methods based on mapped soil variability, farmers can effectively suppress salt expression and safeguard the productivity of their orchard.

Benefits of EM and Gamma Surveys in Orchards:

  1. Early identification of high-risk areas before salinity impacts yields
  2. Improved access for equipment and more accurate data collection before nut set
  3. Custom irrigation strategies informed by soil variability
  4. Reduced long-term risks to orchard health and productivity
